BERLIN

Photos from my August 2000 trip.

The Reichstag

The seat of the German parliament, designed in Italian High Renaissance style, was originally completed in 1894. Restoration has recently been completed, including the installation of a new glass dome.

Inside the dome

Brandenburger Tor

The Brandenburg Gate is one of the two remaining grand arches in Berlin. It was originally built in 1791 to celebrate the Prussian capital and named Friedenstor ("Gate of Peace").

Here is my friend Michael (right) and I.

The Rebirth of a City

Since the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, reunification has given rise to copious, huge construction projects. Literally hundreds of cranes loom in the Berlin skyline.

The View from Above

I took a short balloon trip with my friends Michael (left) and Benji.

Berliner Dom

The restoration of the Berliner Dom is now complete. The Furnsehturm (Television Tower) is on the right.

The Berlin Wall (Western Name), or
The Anti-Fascist Protection Rampart (Eastern Name)

My friend Steffen in front of one of the few sections of Wall still standing.

"Peering Toward Freedom"

The Berlin Wall was actually two walls with a "death zone" in between. This is the view through cracks in the East wall looking accross the death zone at the West Wall. West Berliners were free to approach, protest and graffiti The Wall. East Berliners were strictly forbidden to even come close to it. Had I been found standing in this spot 11 years earlier, I would have been arrested, attacked by dogs or simply shot. Recent disclosures have increased the estimated number of people murdered trying to cross the death zone from less than 100 to nearly 1000.
